ASPEN

“You’re not on the pill?” Dakota’s eyes are twice their usual size as she hisses the words at me from across our patio table at The East Fork. “Aspen!”

“I got caught up in the moment.” I shrug, as if getting pregnant at thirty-eight would be no big deal with me moving home to Indiana in a week. That would be a fun one to explain to my overbearing mother. But there’s a wicked part of me that wants to carry Storm’s baby. A part that hopes that I already am. “The chances of me getting knocked up at my age are significantly less than yours.”

“Spoken like a true moron.”

“My eggs aren’t as fresh as yours.”

Dakota shakes her head as she reaches for her soda. At least for the past two days, she’s been sticking to her firm never drinking again policy. “What are you going to do if you are pregnant, huh? You going to move to Three Rivers and marry Storm?”

My heart stops at those words, like the universe just smacked me square in the chest with an epiphany.

“Oh my god,” Dakota says. “Are you in love with him?”

“What? Of course not.” But shit, I just might be. No man has ever made me feel what Storm made me feel as he plunged into me without mercy. For the first time in my entire life, I felt alive during sex in a way I never have before. Certainly no battery-operated boyfriend has ever given me orgasms like Storm did.

“There’s got to be something in the fucking water here,” Dakota mutters.

“What are you talking about?”

“While you were busy getting knocked up by your future hubby, I was making friends. Do you know how many of the guys here fell in love like the instant they met the women that are now their wives? It’s statistically insane.” She fishes a fry from her burger basket, but instead of eating it, points at me. “Never in my life have I met anyone who falls in love instantly. But you can’t throw a rock without hitting someone here who has. Are we in the Bermuda triangle or something?”

“I didn’t fall instantly in love with Storm. I met him over a decade ago. I promise I didn’t want to climb him like a damn tree back then.”

“But now that you’re both older, it took you all of twenty-four hours to jump his bones and fall in love with him.”

“I’m not in—”

“Mind if we join you?” Storm’s low voice vibrates inside me in all the best naughty places. Dammit, what if Dakota’s right? What if I am in love with him?

“Pull up a couple chairs,” Dakota insists.

I don’t recognize the man with Storm, but he’s definitely Army if his haircut is any clue. It’s possible I know him from one duty station or another, but I’m so caught up in this idea of love, marriage, and babies with Storm that I can hardly focus.

“Ladies, this is Elliot. He just moved to town from Hawaii.”

“Hawaii?” Dakota’s eyes sparkle with interest.
